"The Art of Giving"
'Tis the season to give and receive, but sometimes we focus too much on the "receiving" and not enough on the "giving". Or we might be giving just for the "season of it".
There is an art to giving and sometimes we need a little reminder about what this picture looks like. This time of the year we tend to be too rushed and too stressed to really think about what it all means. The act of giving can almost become mechanical where we are buying gifts just to meet someone's expectations. We know we can't afford it, but somehow we can still justify the purchase. It makes us feel better that everyone else in the store line-up will be afraid to open their next month's credit card statement too.
It is time to create a new picture for giving. The key to giving is to give without any expectation of receiving something in return.
We all have our Santa lists, but it is more important to give to those less fortunate or to someone in need. It can be as simple as a gift of time, kind words or thoughts. It is the intention that counts and not the action.
Do it with love and compassion and you'll receive the greatest gift of all; a warm fuzzy feeling and self -gratification. The secret to giving is to give and then keep it a secret. No one else needs to know what you did. Imagine all of those unexplained gifts, like a room full of new socks and underwear?
Together we can paint a new picture this Christmas, where the "Art of Giving" is framed with love and compassion.
