"What did you say dear?"
How often do you find yourself asking, "what did you say dear"?
Now if you have a medical hearing problem then you have a legitimate excuse. However, if your hearing is fine then perhaps you need to work on your listening skills. I know this was true for me because my smart-ass sixteen year-old son proved it one night. My wife was telling me all about her work day and I was just nodding and making the odd confirmation noise when all of a sudden my son snickered and said "dad, what did mom just say?" I knew I was "busted" as I desperately tried to recall what my loving wife just told me.
I learned the hard way that proper listening is very important for effective communication and we know that good communication is essential for a successful loving relationship. Most of us need to practice "listening more" and "talking less" and perhaps that is why we have two ears and only one mouth.
Proper listening also means caring, understanding and remembering what our partner said. How often have you heard, "Don't you remember? I told you about that last week!" Well here is a little trick that helped save me on several occasions. When your partner is talking, try to visualize what they are saying. It is easy, just try to see their story as a picture in your mind. "Honey I saw this lovely pair of red shoes today at the mall", now visualize your partner wearing those shoes. Don't picture the "red hot" visa card, because this is supposed to be a happy story. If you find it easier, try to see them wearing only the new red shoes, and then at least you will be smiling while you are listening.
